    SAN MARCO

    • The seat of the Venetian political and judicial administration, Sestiere San Marco , the heart of life in Venice from the earliest days of the Republic. Magnificent showcase of the Serenissima was the Piazza San Marco , the square is designed as a backdrop for the Doge's Palace and the Basilica. Napoleon described him as "most elegance room for painting in Europe," and was the only decent square called Piazza - the others are just Campies in meadow.

San Marco abounds with luxury hotels, restaurants and shops. In this town there are several impressive churches, three theaters, including the famous Theatre Fenice and many beautiful palaces. Many of them lined up along the southern bend Canal Grande that borders this neighborhood.

                                                  VENICE

So many world - renowned attractions are packed into San Marco that some visitors never leave - while others are loath to visit, fearing a crush of day trippers and unappetising tourist menus. But it would be unfair to dismiss San Marco simply as a tourist trap. Piazza San Marco is georgeously deserted by sunset, and just down San Marco`s backstreet are authentic osterie (restaurant - bars) where you can eat and drink like a local.

Besides, why deny yourself the pleasure of Teatro La Fenice, Basilica di San Marco, Palazzo Grassi and the Ducal Palace just to be contrarian? Go and judge for yourself whether these cultural landmarks earn their world - class reputations - but don`t stop there. San Marco is packed with contemporary art galleries, chic boutiques and trendy bacari (bars). Rather then rest on its considerable laurels, San Marco keeps the inspiration coming. ALISON BING

                CAMPANIELE DI SAN MARCO

      • There`s no such thing as tall enough or skinny enough for this bell tower`s critics, who for centuries have called the 99m brick tower squat and ungainly. But when the tower - which was raised in AD 888 and rebuilt in 1514 - unexpectedly collapsed in a heap in 1902, city leaders rebuilt it exactly as it was . Fondness for the icon that served as the city`s lighthouse trumped the objections of naysayers, who have to concede that the view from the top is breathtaking. ALISON BING

      • All the show - stopping splendour and sinister intrigue of the Venetian Republic are captured in this one civic monument, which is best viewd on the riveting Itinerari Segreti tour.

      • Enter through the Gothic - colonnaded courtyard, climb the Scala dei Censori (Stairs of the Censors) and Sansovino`s Scala d`Oro (Golden Staircase), and emerge into rooms covered with gorgeous propaganda: Tintoretto`s depictions of Venice`s virtues, Giambattista Tiepolo`s Venice Reciving the Gifts of the Sea from Neptune and, finally, the Council Room designed by Andrea Palladio, with Paolo Veronese`s shamelessly flattering ceilings depicting the good government of the Republic.
      DUCAL PALACE

      • In the trial chambers of the Consiglieri dei Dieci (Council of Ten), Venice`s dreaded secret service, you can see the slot where written denunciations were placed, as well as Veronese`s paintings of Juno scattering her gifts on Venice. Behind the doge`s throne in the cavernous Grand Council room (inaugurated in 1419) is a vision of Paradise by Tintoretto`s son Domenico that`s more politically correct than pretty, crammed with 500 portraits of prominent Venetians (and Tintoretto patrons).
DUCAL PALACE - SALA DEL MAGGIOR CONSIGLIO

      • Downstairs are hellish scenes by the master of apocalyptic visions, Hieronymus Bosch. Across the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs) are Venice`s 16th-century Prigione Nuove (New Prisons), dank cells covered with graffiti and protestations of innocence. Emerge from the dark side of Venice into the sunlight, and admire the pinkish palace loggia graced  with lacy 15th-century Gothic arches. ALISON BING

      • Snicker if you must at his oversized hats and undersized beds, but Napoleon knew something about organisation, both military and architectural. Never mind that there was a churc on the west and of Piazza San Marco: Napoleon razed the place to make room for a grand ballrooom.
      MUSEO CORRER

      • Today the Museo Correr unifies the 1st and 2nd floors of the arcade overlooking the piazza, leading through Graeco - Roman statuary and splendid medieval paintings, and culminating in Venice`s crowning glory: the Libreria Nazionale Marciana`s 16th-century reading room, with representations of wisdom by Veronese and Titian. Don`t miss the Caffe dell Arte, covered in baroque grotesques of griffins and other beasties, and ideal for a 4 glass of Veneto merlot served with views of San Marco worthy of an emperior. • An eccentric for the ages and truly avant-garde , Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo loosened Victorian corsets with free-flowing Grecian dress that drew bohemian devotes such as Isadora Duncan to his Gothic showroom. The rotating exhibitions are of variable interest, but the permanent draws are Moorishdeco chandeliers , salons sumptuously swagged with Fortuny`s printed silks, and the top-floor workshop with design sketches from 1910 that still look modern.                 SANTO STEFANO

      • The timber ceiling of Venice`s larger churches were made by boat builders, and here the carena di nave (ship`s - keel) ceiling gives the impression that you`re standing under an especially fine boat turned upside down for repairs. Duck into the side room to see two moving, brooding Tintoretto canvases: The Last Supper, with a ghostly little dog begging for bread, and the mostly black Washing of the Feet. The cloisters feature Antonio Canova`s precocious 1808 funerary stelae for Giorgio Falier, showing women wrapped in cloaks and their own grief, alongside Tullio Lombardo`s 1505 saint, which has such limpid, lovely upturned eyes that Titian referenced the piece for his Madonna in  I Frari ALISON BING

      • A small baroqe neighbourhood church from the outside, Santa Maria del Giglio is a small wonder inside, with a 10th-century Byzantine layout and intriguing works by three European masters. Hiding behind the altar is Veronese`s Madonna with Child, with Tintoretto`s Four Evangelists flanking the organ. The Molin Chapel is a pretty piece of nepotism, with a ceiling painted by Jacopo Tintoretto`s son Domenico; it`s upstaged, however, by a small painting of Mary with Jesus and St John by the master of roly.poly gorgeousness, Peter Paul Rubens. A major recent show of avant-garde glassworks featured Kiki Smith`s  visceral vessels and Roberta Silva`s single exhalation captured for poetic posterity in a glass bubble. ALISON BING

      • The terrace looks past the statues of the two Moors over Piazza San Marco, and the views is well worth the climb up the steep, claustrophobia - triggering spiral staircase. In the piazza, look up to see three kings and an angel emerge from the clock on Epiphany (6 January) and the feast of the Ascension (second Sunday in May). ALISON BING

Look for Rome - based Serafino Maiorano`s artfully blurred digital photographs, with bleeding reds that evoke the work of Vittore Carpaccio, paintings by Lithuanian Andrius Zakarauskas, where history is cleverly reduced to saluting, finger pointing and other iconic gestuers.                   CHIESA DI SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE

          • Sunglasses become essential as you approach San Giorgio - this Andrea Palladio-designed masterpiece is set to dazzle. The white Istrian marble facade is almost blinding head-on, but close up you`ll notice the depth of the massive columns that support the tympanium, with the echoing triangles representing the Holy Trinity. This is possibly the only Venetian church where, once inside, you`ll have to remind yourself to look at the paintings.

                                             Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore

          • Ceilings billow above, and high windows fill the space with filtered sunshine and easy grace. The black, white and red inlaid-stone floor will draw you toward the altar, which is flanked by two Tintoretto masterpieces: Collecting the Manna and The Last Supper. Sebastiano Ricci`s sweet Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints evokes an audible `aww`, as does the stirring panorama from atop the bell tower. ALISON BING
