ACCOMMODATION

  • First things first: You do not have to stay on the mainland, missing the opportunity to wake up in fairy-tale Venice. Whoever keeps circulating the rumour that Venice doesn`t have enough beds offers no rooms under € 200 is about a decade out of date - and hasn`t heard of the internet.
Hotel Danielli
  • Over the past 10 years, many Venetians have opened their homes as B&B or affitacamere (rooms for rent). These places are much more personable than Venice`s big hotels, and they`re often tucked away in neighbourhoods where you can mingle with the locals but still be close to the sights. Better still, you can compare costs online, then negotiate a rate that fits your budget by emailing the hotel or B&B directly. Compare hotels, B&B and apartments at AGODA , BOOKING.COM and TRIPADVISOR agency. With research, you can find places that don`t double their low-season price in high season, and even a few places under € 100.
  • Hotel Rialto
  • If you`re still thinking of staying in Mestre, consider the following scenario. You stay in Venice until sundown to get the full effect of this romantic city, linger over a spritz (prosecco-based cocktail), then decide you`ll try a promising Venetian osteria (restaurant-bar) you read about on those pages. After a lovely meai, you have to catch a train to Mestre; even if your hotel is in a nice part of town, the train station certainly isn`t. Tomorrow, instead of waking up to the sound of gondoliers crying `Oooooeee!`, you`ve got a symphony of honks at Mestre rush hour.
  • So, that being said: where would you like to stay in Venice? The most reasonably priced B&Bs and affitacamere are clustered in residential sections of Santa Croce, San Polo and Cannaregio; B&Bs in San Marco, Dorsoduro and Castello, with proximity to major attractions, tend to be pricier. Dorsoduro and San Marco offer many chic boutique accommodations, Cannaregio is a good bet for quiet and period charm, and Santa Croce and Giudecca offer a Venetian immersion experience just off the tourist trail.
  • Bella Venezia Hotel
  • When nothing less than a palazzo (palace or mansion) with a Grand Canal view will do, you`ll probably end up staying in San Marco. Several of the historic palaces along the Grand Canal have been bought by hotel chains, adding an air of brisk efficiency to these luxury operations that you`ll find either helpful or off-putting.

  • The Starwood-run Gritti Palace has maintained its swagger and antique charm, while the Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel - a former high-baroque gambling den - has recently completed an elegant renovation. For a luxury waterfront stay, you might also consider staying in a Palladio-designed cloister at the new Bauer Palladio & Spa or head to the Lido for the Liberty art deco grandeur of the Hotel des Bains.
